If you’re just starting out as a new gardener, start with a handful of plants that are easy to grow. Here is a list of food plants anyone can grow.
Food Plants Anyone Can Grow
My very first year gardening was probably my most successful year gardening. However, I also didn’t try a bunch of crazy stuff that year. I only grew food plants anyone can grow. Nowadays, I plant all sorts of things and have zero self control.
1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are the most versatile plant in my opinion. Eating them fresh off the vine is one of the greatest things in the world. My children prefer cherry tomatoes and we plant so many of those, strategically placed all over the property, so they can snack all day long while playing outside.
In addition to eating tomatoes fresh, you can preserve them in so many ways! Sauces, soups, condiments, and more.
Tomatoes are self-pollinating, so there is no need to even think about how to grow them really. They are easy to grow in containers and in the ground.

2. Cucumbers
Have you ever noticed, during prime garden harvest time, people are giving away cucumbers left and right? That is because they are so plentiful! They don’t last a real long time once picked, so you will want to eat them fresh or preserve them. Pickling is a fun way to get into canning!
Cucumbers can be grown so they go vertical or you can let them be on the ground spread out.

3. Salad Greens
Some sort of lettuce or mixed green seed is a good way to begin direct sowing. Direct sowing means to just place to seed right into the ground or a pot.
Water these seeds well and harvest in about a month. Greens can make you feel successful in a short time period. To harvest, just take some scissors or a knife and cut the leaves about one inch above the soil line. If the weather is cool enough, you might even get a second harvest off them!

4. Potatoes
Firstly, plant the potatoes seeds in the ground. All potato seeds are is just cut up potatoes with an eye on them. Secondly, cover with soil up with they start appearing (this is called earthing up). Bam! Potatoes are done.
Harvest them early for young potatoes or wait for bigger potatoes.

5. Beans
The amount of variety of beans out there is overwhelming. However, since you are a beginner, my advice would be to grow a pole bean. Pole beans take up less space. For example, green beans would be a good bean to start with, as your family will probably eat them fresh.
My kids really love sugar snap peas. Which, I’m going to show my “unexpertness” here, I don’t even know if that qualifies as a bean or not! If not, just a bonus food plant anyone can grow for you!
