If you’re a parent, then you have probably already heard about baby sign language. But seriously, should you really be doing it and what are some basic baby signs?
But why should I teach my baby sign language?
Communication isn’t exactly easy for somebody who can’t speak yet. They can’t tell you what they want, so maybe they are tired but you’re sitting there trying to shove milk down their throat. When your child is able to tell you that they are tired, things become much easier. Frustration in the parents and the child goes down tremendously. You’ve heard of the terrible twos right?? Even basic baby signs decrease that because communication is easier between parent and child.
When should I start signing?
Right now! It is never too early or too late to start signing with your child! I have started at birth and I have started with a 5 year old. Now, the 5 year old was able to pick it up and sign back to me faster, but that doesn’t mean my infant wasn’t soaking in the knowledge! Sign language is an awesome second language and you could totally implement it into your homeschool if you choose to homeschool. Starting this out in preschool would be a fun extra!
How do I get started with even basic baby signs?
Consistency! Start with one or two signs and practice them over and over again. Use them every time you say the word in real life. Then, gradually add in more signs. We have used My Signing Time over the last 3 years. They have curriculum for babies all the way through adults. I could not recommend them more! If you would like a free 14 day trial of My Signing Time, then click here!
Remember though, your child is not going to sign perfectly right away. Just like when a child is learning to talk, they don’t say the words perfectly, but they end up learning it correctly over time. It is the same way with signs.
In this video, I show you how to actually sign the signs.
Which signs should I teach?
This is totally up to you and your lifestyle. If you are a vegan family that doesn’t drink milk, well then, milk is not a sign you should concentrate on learning right now. Water would be more important to learn. But I’m going to give you my list of ten basic signs that I believe will help you tremendously in the toddler years.
Here are the basic baby signs I recommend starting with:
